No matter where you go, you can find weight loss pills, diet pills, full-fledged diet plans, and weight loss clinics.  Weight loss has become an epidemic, most often in women, in society today. Whether you need to lose weight or not, all the excessive advertising, of these products, make you feel that you should lose weight.

Let’s say that you do need to lose some weight, if it is a lot or just 10 to 20 pounds (this smaller amount is probably the hardest to lose). These programs will likely be beneficial to you, in the beginning, but are not long-term solutions. Upon starting a weight loss program, you should get some good guides to live by, which will include a proper exercise and eating program; although, the way most of these work is similar to diets,calorie intake is the main focus of the program.

Although there is nothing wrong with a proper caloric intake, there is something wrong with becoming so conscious of calories that you are actually starving your body of the proper nutrients it needs. Keep an eye on your energy levels, if you notice that you are constantly tired, you need to adjust your eating plan to include more calories. Proper weight loss does not come from starvation.

Then there are diet pills. A lot of these pills contain chemicals that your body does not need. They may curb your appetite to the point that you are still starving yourself. Essentially, they are the same, with the exception of nutrient intake. With a healthy eating plan, you can lose more weight than most diets, along with filling your body with proper nutrients, which leads to a healthier you, a longer life, and an overall more confident person.

First off, you want to try to implement about 5 – 6 small meals throughout the day, rather than one, two, or three. Secondly, stop eating when you are full. (There are many people who have implemented just this step, and lost that first 20 or so pounds.)  This is a quick rule of thumb, for losing weight, and staying healthy. While it may not be easy to start, once you have created the habit, you are on the right path. Cut down your portions, so that you are not tempted to keep eating past your full point.

Whether you use diet pills, or just simply count calories, you need to begin an exercise program that has a good mix of cardio and strength training built into it.  The rule of thumb, discussed above, increases the rate at which your metabolism can burn fat. Each one individualy increases your metabolism, but all three together will boost it to its fullest capacity. The better you treat yourself, and your body, now – the better off you will become.

Recently Harvard nutrition experts have unveiled flaws in the US Governments recommended healthy eating.

This article reveals how the Government experts have been selling the public political needs rather than the public’s health needs.  Here at, we are busy trying to keep our readers as current as possible on the health scene.

The Healthy Eating Plate, a visual guide that provides a blueprint for eating a healthy meal, was unveiled today by nutrition experts at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) in conjunction with colleagues at Harvard Health Publications. Similar to the U.S. government’s MyPlate, the Healthy Eating Plate is simple and easy to understand — and it addresses important deficiencies in the MyPlate icon.


“Unfortunately, like the earlier U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) pyramids, MyPlate mixes science with the influence of powerful agricultural interests, which is not the recipe for healthy eating,” said Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition and chair of the Department of Nutrition at HSPH. “The Healthy Eating Plate is based on the best available scientific evidence and provides consumers with the information they need to make choices that can profoundly affect our health and well-being.”

Comparing the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate with the USDA’s MyPlate shows the shortcomings in the government’s guide. MyPlate does not tell consumers that whole grains are better for health than refined grains; its protein section offers no indication that some high-protein foods — fish, poultry, beans, nuts — are healthier than red meats and processed meats; it is silent on beneficial fats; it does not distinguish between potatoes and other vegetables; it recommends dairy at every meal, even though there is little evidence that high dairy intake protects against osteoporosis but substantial evidence that high intake can be harmful; and it says nothing about sugary drinks. If you’ve been following my advice of including a good portion of your daily carbohydrate intake at breakfast, you might want to skip your morning coffee, unless it’s decaf, that is.
Well, the recommendation to consume ample carbohydrates at breakfast is due to the fact that glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity are at their peak in the morning – basically, your body is primed to “deal” with carbohydrates quite well during the first few hours of the day, and that ability continues to wane as the day goes on.
So where does coffee come in?
Well, quite a few studies have shown that caffeine intake acutely decreases glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, sabbotaging your generally “good” ability to process carbohydrates in the morning.
Here’s just one of many studies:
Caffeinated coffee consumption impairs blood glucose homeostasis in response to high and low glycemic index meals in healthy men. Moisey LL, Kacker S, Bickerton AC, Robinson LE, Graham TE. Am J Clin Nutr. 2008 May;87(5):1254-61.
Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
DESIGN: Ten healthy men underwent 4 trials in a randomized order. They ingested caffeinated (5 mg/kg) coffee (CC) or the same volume of decaffeinated coffee (DC) followed by either a high or low glycemic index (GI) cereal (providing 75 g of carbohydrate) mixed meal tolerance test.
CONCLUSION: The ingestion of caffeinated coffee with either a high or low GI meal significantly impairs acute blood glucose management and insulin sensitivity compared with ingestion of decaffeinated coffee.
In the end, decreased insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance = more insulin, less fat burning, and more fat storage; three things you DON’T want if you’re looking to shed those unwanted pounds.
Suggestions: If you’re going to consume coffee or caffeine in general, it’s best consumed at times in which you are not consuming substantial carbohydrate. This means ditching caffeinated coffee with breakfast in favor of decaf, and also avoiding energy drinks and other caffeine boosters during workouts in which a carbohydrate recovery beverage is being consumed.
